A Guide to Shaving
Be a smoothie and cut out the razor rash with Ray’s top shaving tips for men.
- Fill the sink with hot water, soak a flannel in it, hold it over your face until the flannel loses most of its heat. This opens up pores lets the blade get tight to your hairs’ roots.
- Pre shave products are as important as post. They soften hair and tighten skin preventing razor drag and giving you a closer shave. I love the classically scented D.R. Harris’ pre shave oil.
- Go with the flow: shaving in the same direction as the hair grows prevents in-growing hairs and an aggressive shaving rash..
- Shave straight after a hot shower or bath, the pores are already open.
- Try and avoid a multi-bladed razor: a decent single-bladed razor is more than enough. I use one from Edwin Jagger. the blade replacements are half the price and it’s twice as good for your skin.
- If you really must use a multi-bladed razor, change the blade regularly. If you have thick facial hair, it’s is only good for 3-4 shaves.
- In the same way you used a hot flannel before you shaved, use a cold one after. It leaves the skin feeling fresh and snaps your pores shut. Most refreshing!
- Ouch! Cut yourself? Use a traditional Alum Block, it helps stop bleeding and minimizes infections. Watch out though, it does have a kick!
- Don’t use aftershave. You need to put oils back, not strip them away. I am a big fan of D.R. Harris’ aftershave milk. It moisturises and it doesn’t have that burn of an aftershave.
- Apply two sprays of your favourite cologne away from where you have shaved. My favourite is Tom Fords’ Black Orchid
